Tricky 1/3 of a Mile Track Will Provide Plenty of Excitement for
Fans and Drivers
ATHENS, GA (May 6, 2008) – Alligators are synonymous with
Florida. They are also some of the fiercest animals on the planet.
By comparison, the RC Cola / MoonPie ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour
has some of the fiercest racecar drivers on the planet. On Saturday,
May 10th, all entities will come together as ASA SAT tackles the
heart of Florida in the “Gator 100.”
The 1/3 of a mile high-banked oval will play host to the final
stop in the “Sunshine State” for the inaugural RC
Cola / MoonPie ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour. Just like every stop
on the tour, local drivers will look to battle with the tour regulars
in search of victory. Travis Cope has circled the tricky track
countless times; in fact, he likes to call Bronson his home away
from home.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Travis
Cope, who finished third in the most recent ASA SAT event at USA
Int’l Speedway in Lakeland, FL. “We basically learned
how to race there and every time we’re there we are pretty
good. We were fast the last time we raced there, so we are going
to go back with the same set up and the same attitude, so we will
see what happens. They have a lot of tough competition with ASA
Southeast.”
Travis’s father, former NASCAR All-Pro Champion, Mike Cope,
owns Bronson Motor Speedway and he likes to keep things as traditional
as possible. The walls still bare the red and white stripe pattern
that has been a staple in racing for more than 40 years.
“It’s a really cool vibe when you go in there,”
said Travis. “My dad likes to keep the place as old school
as possible. He’s a throwback guy who just wants to keep
grass roots racing around in Florida.”
Like many of the young talented drivers on the ASA Southeast
Asphalt Tour, Jess Mattox has never raced at the Bronson oval.
This event will mark the third trip in four races to a new track
for 20-year old Mattox.
“I have seen some races there, but never raced on it,”
said Mattox, who is currently eighth in ASA SAT points. “I
think Bronson is a lot like Cordele and we had a good run at Cordele.
We talked to some guy and used the notes from Cordele to have
a baseline idea on how to set up for Bronson.”
The Florida drivers took the top four spots in the last event
at USA International Speedway, but Mattox thinks the ASA Southeast
Tour contingent will have something to say about that at Bronson.
“It will be good to get back on a crate-motor type track,”
added Mattox. “The Florida guys will be strong again, but
we should be there with them on the speed charts.”
No matter who ends up in victory lane, you san rest assure they
will have earned the win and the fans will be on their feet.
“It’s just a short little fast track,” said
Cope. “You have to really race guys there. Sometimes there
is some good beating and banging too. I think the fans are going
to love it.”
Round number four of the RC Cola / MoonPie ASA Southeast Asphalt
Tour will be on Saturday, May 10th, at Bronson Motor Speedway
